Barbados is just 14 x 21 miles of pear shaped paradise surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches and cool turquoise sea. This and it's atlantic location may put it on a par with Fuerteventura or Lanzarote but here the comparisons end...................................................

Lush green waters, palm laden beaches and uncrowded waves just don't compare to Fuerte's ever increasing concrete jungle. In Barbados, the mixture of old and new balances expansion. The island remains relatively unspoilt by development although the beach entrances have changed over the years as new hotels or appartments have secured beach frontage, especially on the West Coast.

Bathsheba (known as Soupbowl) on the east coast is one of the most beautiful parts of the island and is the perfect surf spot before the wind gets up. There are great vantage points from the hill as you approach through winding tropical roads with monkeys in the trees, goats, brightly coloured bajan houses, musical rocks and white horses on the turquoise waters below. Bajan Surf Bungalow has a great view of Bathsheba (see below) and after a hard morning's surf, is one of the few places to get out of the midday sun . You can also stay here.

Barbados rocks by night too ...steel band entertainment beneath starry skies and drinks whilst waves add spray to the air.

Left handers on the south coast from south point to Rockley need a big swell. Freights can get crowded but the number of beaches and the variety keeps crowd hassles to a minimum.

Fish markets and supermarkets at Oistins are a regular stop. Petrol is cheap and Hire cars start at about $600 BD or £195.00. Look out for the island's speciality - Roti's (curried chicken/fish/veg. in a tortillo) between 5 and 10 BDS for quick and nourishing surfer's brunch/lunch. Currently about 2.8 BDS to the £.

Machineel trees (with their poisonous fruits resembling little green apples), are interspersed with almonds and coconut palms.
