The BUSA Universities Surfing Championships

Fistral, Newquay, March 5th /6th 2005

Nick Tiscoe, representing Plymouth University Men’s team defeated Christian Boletta (Plymouth), last years winner James Hick (Exeter), and Nick Dowrick (Swansea) in a very close final. Nick managed to select two good waves early in the heat and perform a series of radical manoeuvres, forcing the other surfers to play catch-up. The men’s team title was retained by Plymouth University.

In the Women’s final Zoe Parsons (St Mark & St Johns) defeated Nina Blake (Plymouth), Beth Price (Swansea) and Kim Howarth (UWE). Zoe Parsons result helped St Mark & St Johns University win the Women’s team title.

The 450 Surfers who competed over the weekend were treated to mixed surf conditions and cold weather. The swell dropped to 1-2ft on Sunday and the sun came out allowing the spectators a good view of all the action. Thousands of surfers and supporters watched an exciting event dominated this year by universities based in the south west of England.

UK Surf Promotions and the British Surfing Association who organised the event on behalf of the British Universities Students Association were pleased with the success of the competition; Karen Walton National Director of the BSA said ‘I would like to thank all the students who competed making the contest one of the biggest in Europe with regard to entries’

We would like to thank all the sponsors who support the competition year after year

Interview with 2004 Universities Champion Anne Gallagher

Home town and country? Porthcawl, Wales.
How long have you been surfing? 5 years, since I was 15
Which University are you attending and what are you studying? Aberystwyth University studying geography, film, and television.
Other interests besides surfing? Lifeguarding, swimming, climbing, photography, longboard skateboarding.
Where all have you surfed? All over Wales, Devon, Cornwall, France, and Spain.
Favorite place to surf? Aber....when the trap is good it has a really nice wave.
Future Plans? I would like to pursue surfing but will have to see how things go. I will continue to surf no matter what.
Any surfers who you draw inspiration from? Whoever's in the water with me that surfs better than me I look up to.
Current ranking before 2004 nationals? 4th in Wales.
Best experience in surfing? In September I spent a month touring France and Spain surfing everyday at loads of different breaks.
Worst experience in surfing? Getting stuck on the inside in high tide in February - I got munched.
Favorite surf video/movie? Big Wednesday is a classic and Blue Juice is really cheesy but good.
Have you had much support as a female surfer? There's been none whatsoever from the industry, but fellow surfers and friends are really supportive.
How did the waves feel on your first day at nationals this year? It was mostly just mushy whitewater. At some points it was head high, but quite lumpy. It was hard work and there was no time to wait for good waves coming in out back.
How do you feel about going into semi-finals tomorrow? I just want to go out and have fun.
Words to live by? As long as I'm surfing and happy that's all that matters.
